Edgitorial: Here at Spartan Edge we remain independent. Nobody tells us what to write or how to write it, and nobody censors our words once we do write them. And we like it like that. In the end, we produce quality writing in a niche on campus that was unfilled until we came along – that of the multimedia-driven Web site. Click here for more.

Opinion: Jacob Kanclerz had trouble gaining access to student athletes for a story, showing how alternative media can be limited in its principles of free press. This censorship affects journalists like us at all levels, and you can be assured that the same problems can occur right here at SpartanEdge. Read more.

The Adverse Economic Circumstances Fund was created at MSU to assist students facing changing financial conditions due to the poor economy. The $500,000 fund was announced in an e-mail sent to students by MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon on Nov. 25. Alisha Green has more.

STUDY ABROAD: The School of Journalism offers a variety of study abroad programs. Here’s a look at what Spartan Edge writer Jaret Bozigian came across while reporting in the British Isles. TIPS: Jaret Bozigian offers advice on how to get around Ireland and Scotland.

Professor Interview: Bill McWhirter always runs scared. Despite experience as a foreign correspondent, bureau chief and writer for Time magazine for over 30 years, the journalism professor and editor-in-residence for the MSU School of Journalism considers quitting at the end of every school year, fearing he will not be able to make the next semester as good as the one he just finished. Alisha Green has the interview.

Professor Interview: Imagine the world without sound. That is what life was like for Michigan State University professor Nan Johnson after she lost her hearing at age 59 from the inheritance of a single gene. Kate March has the story.

Professor Interview: He teaches classes of 600 students and has a resume with pages full of the committees he has been on and articles he has written. Just how did University Distinguished Professor of Economics Mordechai Kreinin become an economics guru? Alisha Green has the story.

Presidential candidate Barack Obama lived up to what McCain's campaign has labeled his movie star reputation when an estimated 20,000 people attended his rally at Michigan State University. Brittany Shammas and Jordan Travis have the story.

Every time a toilet flushes, a shower runs or a sink turns on at Michigan State University, one can feel confident that MSU is doing its part to save the planet. This is all a part of the university’s efforts in the “Go Green” program, aimed at helping to conserve water and energy. Over the past ten years, the university has been implementing changes to conserve. Kate March has the story.

After talking to several people, most would not consider the river clean, with some claiming they “wouldn’t swim in it” and “it used to be clean,” and predicting that if an individual swam in it he “would get something.” But thanks to work done by faculty and students in the Fisheries and Wildlife Department, all of these rumors about the Red Cedar can be dispelled. Jacob Kanclerz has the story.

You see them everywhere. Locked outside of your dorm and lecture halls, whizzing by you on the sidewalk, trudging through the sludge in the bike lane. Bicycles. But then, you catch a flash of color, maybe orange rims or bright green handlebar tape. Odds are, it was one of a growing fleet of fixed-gear bicycles zipping across campus. Jordan Travis has more.

With a 5,200-acre campus that over 46,000 students trek across daily, MSU offers many ways to get around. The MSU Bikes Service Center is doing its part, working to provide a safe, fun and environmentally friendly transportation alternative for the campus community. Hailey Schaldach has more.

Any big night for Michigan State students is usually a big night for the East Lansing Police Department…and Halloween is a very big night. Officers Travis Bove and Adam Park have worked the midnight shift at the department for the past three years. During that time, they’ve encountered countless Halloween characters and pranks. Shirley Bolden has the story.

Five months after renovation began, double doors lined with white masking tape are the only visible pieces of the Sparty’s in Holmes Hall. The convenience store, which closed its doors in May, is scheduled to re-open Oct. 27 with a fresh design and feel.

The midnight showing of “Twilight” is comparable to the madness of “Harry Potter” premiers. As it was time for the movie to start, applause broke out when it started…and then again when Edward first came on….and then again. Jaret Bozigian said the movie did the book justice. Read here for his review.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, Forever In A Day played its second show in a month-long tour. It definitely wasn’t the biggest performance but the band’s attitude was as if it was headlining at a palace. Shannon Oneil explains why Forever In A Day is a full package of personalities, history, friends and music.

Folk is a little niche of music filled with strange instruments, squeaky notes, unconventional members, non-surface lyrics, and, most of all, soul. This means one basically loves it or hates it, but it seems that Michigan State has a group of people whom found their love because on Friday, October 3 the Union Ballroom held Folk Fest featuring Chris Bathgate, Southeast Engine, and Frontier Ruckus.
