Edge Eight: Top 8 current MTVU videos
By Kristin Skaggs
MTVU takes pride in the ability to connect with what college students are listening to. While they may not be able to capture everyone’s musical tastes, they come pretty close by playing a huge variety of music genres. Here are the top eight videos on MTVU right now.
8. “Make her Say” by Kid Cudi
This song features newcomer Kid Cudi’s mentors Kanye West and Common. The hook samples Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and includes lyrics from several of the year’s most popular songs, such as “Whatever You Like,” “I Love College,” and “Blame It.” The video is also really cool because it uses a split screen to show two angles at a time.
7. “Lights Out” by Santigold
Santigold is fun, fashionable, and unapologetic. This song is fun, but the visuals in the video are the best part. “Lights Out” plays with pattern. Santigold’s and her backup singers’ lipstick, pants and sunglass lenses change to match the backgrounds.
6. “Club Love” by The Cataracs
“Club Love” is a little techno ditty by the relatively unknown pop duo The Cataracs. It’s relentlessly catchy and has been stuck in my head for several hours at a time. The video features the members of The Cataracs foraging through the jungle. What’s not to like?
5. “Supernova” by Mr. Hudson feat. Kanye West
Mr. Hudson and Kanye West are a pretty interesting match in this song. West doesn’t rap at all, opting for singing instead. Well, singing with a touch of auto-tune, that is. The video is very visually appealing, with parts of it in a sleek, modern apartment and parts among the stars.
4. “What A Catch, Donnie” by Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy’s videos don’t impress me often, but this one is special. The song is more soulful than their usual stuff, and the video actually has a lot of depth. There are some fun cameos toward the end as well, but the video is noticeably lacking bassist Pete Wentz.
3. “Party in Your Bedroom” by Cash Cash
There’s something special about a song that is pure happiness. “Party In Your Bedroom” is upbeat and fun, and the video matches perfectly. It’s the classic high school party video.
2. “Substitution” by Silversun Pickups
So maybe the lead singer’s voice sounds a little like a girl’s sometimes, but this video is so fabulous. Girls playing musical chairs in high heels are obviously a fantastic premise, and it is executed wonderfully.
1. “Animal” by Miike Snow
Miike Snow is the epitome of what a college station should be playing. He is just obscure enough that you can feel cool for knowing who he is, but also radio-friendly enough that you can bob your head to his songs.
