Edge Eight: Scariest Halloween Must-See Movies
By: Lacee Shepherd
Halloween is that magical time during college when you can wander the streets in a drunken haze in ridiculous outfits, without having to dodge the reproachful eyes of sober on lookers. Unfortunately, that glorious day that allows adults to act like irresponsible children falls on a Wednesday this year, so the partying may have to be kept to a minimum. For those of you looking to still celebrate All Hallows Eve but still make it to classes or work the next morning, look no further. Here is SpartanEdge’s Eight Scariest Horror Movies.
1. “The Exorcist”
12-year-old Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) begins to act out. After realizing it isn’t anything psychological, her mother resorts to an exorcism. Let the spinning heads and speaking in tongues begin! You need to see this movie because it is a classic that managed to scare everyone when it first came out and can still strike viewers with a harsh case of goosebumps. Demon possessions are a hot trend right now, but it’s always interesting to see where it all began.

3. “The Last Exorcism”
When it comes to horror movies it’s usually best to go old school to not be disappointed. But for this flick I’ll make an exception. The story follows Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian, “General Hospital”) who has been performing exorcisms all of his life, but refuses to believe they are real. That is until he is hired to cure Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) and realizes the demonic forces he has been casting away for years are really the ones causing mayhem.

4. “Sinister”
Melding together the trends of evil children and demonic forces, Sinister offers a new twist on the old horror plot. Ethan Hawke (“Dead Poets Society”) stars as Ellison Oswalt, an author who moves into a new house with his wife and two children. After a few days he finds old footage of families being murdered. It may sound like a typical horror story, but the twist at the end is sure to surprise you.

5. “The Thing”
Set in the barren frozen land of the Antarctic, we watch as the little known “Thing” hunts down workers and scientists at an American research station. What makes this movie particularly creepy is the creature killing everyone is constantly evolving and you never know what is real or what is going to kill you. It’s an original spin on the ‘alien’ idea avoiding hokey invasions and abductions.

6. “The Strangers”
Following troubled couple Kristen and James (Liv Tyler, “Empire Records” and Scott Speedman, “Underworld”) home from a wedding reception, it doesn’t take long until a number of psychos start tormenting the two. While the scariest parts of the movie are those unexpected pop out moments, there is a certain type of terror that begs the characters and viewers to ask: why them?

7. Child’s Play
On the run from the cops, serial killer Charles “Chucky” Ray (Brad Dourif, “Dune,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”), performs a voodoo ritual to put himself in the body of the creepiest looking doll ever sold. The film (and those there after) follows Chucky, in his doll form, as he continues to murder those around him. This film is guaranteed to give you the creeps and will have you keeping your eyes on every doll that won’t take theirs off you.

8.” Paranormal Activity”
As the fourth installment is coming out, it seems like the perfect time to revisit the first Paranormal Activity. We watch through a series of home videos as Katie and Micah (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) go through a violent demon possession. While most will argue this movie isn’t scary, there is no denying that after viewing this movie every bump in the night will have you convinced you’re about to be ripped from your bed and dragged down the hall.
