Meet the Editors
Editor-in-Chief: Jacob Kanclerz
When it came to school subjects, I always preferred writing to math, which is what I believe led me to take my first journalistic writing class in high school. Regardless of the reason, what has developed from then is a definite passion for both the craft of writing and the spirit of journalism. I love writing for the sake of writing, but I have come to appreciate the power that journalism and the media have in the world, especially the positive effects.
That passion has taken me from being sports editor of my high school paper to a satirical writer for Spartan Weekly to being a staffer and MusicEdge editor here at Spartanedge to starting my own blog about the Red Wings to covering MSU for the Red Cedar Log yearbook in just a short amount of time. Everywhere I have been I’ve been able to convey my other passions, whether it’s sports or music or something else, through writing and storytelling.
As the leader of Spartanedge, I’m excited to help this rising alternative publication reach more readers and make a bigger difference on campus. Spartanedge strives to serve every student on campus by covering every kind of niche at MSU, big or small. We also work to break stories and issues that students can’t find anywhere else in campus media. And of course, as an online publication we work to present our stories through creative means by using a variety of multimedia to better serve the readers looking for news online. For me, being able to work towards making a difference and helping the common good through one of my favorite passions, writing, is the perfect combination. For writers here, Spartanedge is what you make of it. We are hoping our readers can make Spartanedge their reliable source for campus news, issues and events that span from Harrison to Hagadorn and everywhere in between.
Managing Editor/Blog Editor: Cara Boyer
When I was little, there was always a telltale sign to alert my parents that I was awake in the morning. My mom says she could hear me reading to myself in my crib from down the hallway. I didn’t know how to decipher the words yet, but my favorite stories had been read to me so many times that I could recite them back to myself and turn the pages at the appropriate times. With that in mind, I think it’s safe to say that I have had an affinity for words my entire life.
Movies and music are my other two passions, which explains why I’m an entertainment writer. I’ve been devouring the glossy pages of Rolling Stone and People pretty much ever since I stepped out of the confines of that crib. My goal is to be an editor at Rolling Stone, and I’m already envisioning my name on top of the editor’s page. Some may wonder why I’m planning my life around a “dying industry,” but I won’t let it stop me. In the words of Oscar Wilde, “Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.”
Managing Editor/Entertainment & Events Editor: Brandon Kirby
I’m a junior majoring in Journalism and minoring in Film, and I’m also a member of the Spartan Marching Band.
Journalism is wildly important because without journalists, who else is there to tell people stories about what’s going on around them? And that’s why I love it. I love the researching, the interviewing, the writing, and most of all, the things you end up discovering through the process of it all.
And my love for movies is just as strong. Similar idea, too. Movies tell stories, like journalism, through images, motion, and sound. And in my future, I fully intend on combining these two loves into one hybrid career. Wishful thinking, I know. In any case, I’m here now as the Entertainment & Events section editor, and I vow to do my very best in contributing to make Spartanedge your number one source for alternative multimedia news.
Public Relations Manager: Jennifer Marinelli
As a junior studying Communication, Professional Writing, French and Theatre, it goes without saying that I have a myriad of interests and a curious constitution.
After learning about Spartanedge in an introductory journalism class last spring, I jumped at the chance to explore the field in a practical way. I was immediately grabbed by the editors’ edgy approach to journalism. I was also thrilled to find a medium in which I could be active in all of my interests, whether it was film, theatre or public relations.
As Public Relations Manager this year it is my mission to make Spartanedge a relevant student news source, not only in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, but university-wide. I am very excited to start this journey and I hope to expose Spartanedge to the students who inspire our stories.
MusicEdge Editor: Daniel Hodgman
I once decided to write for my high school newspaper. From there I knew that journalism was something I wanted to learn more about. Now I look over the MusicEdge page for Spartanedge and feel blessed to be given an opportunity to expand my journalism skills.
I guess you want to know what I think about music since I’m the MusicEdge editor right? Well, in a nutshell here it goes: I’m one of the oddballs who thinks Pavement is the most important band of the 90s. A lot of people disagree with me.
In other news, I like reading. However, I must admit that I didn’t really get into reading until high school. I believe that the first thirty sentences of a novel truly show how the story will turn out, but that rule has exceptions.
My favorite food is milksteak. My favorite hobby is magnets. And I hate people’s knees.
