Weekly New Music: Sept 11 Releases

Posted by Nick Meador on Sep 12, 2007 in Records

This was a pretty big week for new releases! The ones I’m excited about:
simian
1) Simian Mobile Disco – Attack Decay Sustain Release : This album dropped in Europe back in June, but its acclaim keeps growing and growing. In fact, we’re experiencing a dance music revolution. Everyone’s starting to catch on to Daft Punk’s genius. This French duo doesn’t copy them, but they and a few other groups do take after D.P. “D.A.N.C.E.” became a surprise hit in Europe, but the entire album is highly recommended. Oh, and the following music video wins the award for sexiest music video in history.

pinback
2) Pinback – Autumn of the Seraphs : It seems like Pinback have really concentrated their strengths on their new album. I saw them live in Chicago and wasn’t really enthralled, but the band makes consistently interesting recordings that are worth giving a listen to.

The ones other people are excited about:
kanye
1) Kanye West – Graduation : I know what you’re gonna say. “Oh Nick just doesn’t like this one because he sampled Daft Punk.” That is part of it, but at least West got permission from the almighty French robots to use their song “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” from 2001’s epic album Discovery. But at a party last weekend, someone played the song three times in a row, and I almost started crying. I haven’t checked out the rest of the album yet.

2) Animal Collective – Strawberry Jam : I don’t know why, but I find the album’s cover art to be absolutely terrifying. I know this is the ADD generation and all, but I still haven’t quite caught onto this erratic group. Maybe this album will change that. That is, if I can contain my vomit every time I see the album cover.

go team
3) The Go! Team – Proof of Youth – It’s going to take a lot for me to open up to The Go! Team again. Their first album was my favorite of 2005, but I feel that their music was better sans female rapper.

Other releasees:
1) Hot Hot Heat – Happiness Ltd.

2) Grand National – A Drink and a Quick Decision

3) Dirty Projectors – Rise Above

4) Shout Out Louds – Our Ill Wills
