Top 50 Songs of 2007
This is almost as absurd as a list of the year’s top albums, but my obsessive nature won’t let up. I had neither the time nor the energy to reorganize them into descending order. HINT: Many of these are in the playlist. Listen while you read for maximum pleasure.
1. Radiohead – Weird Fishes/Arpeggi : Radiohead’s genius is to begin this song with a simple drum and guitar part, and then build layer upon indecipherable layer into a beautiful mess of orgasmic noise.
2. Of Montreal – We Were Born The Mutants Again With Leafling : Most people wouldn’t pick the album’s closing song as their favorite, but I did. With barely any words, this song says, “I DID IT! I OVERCAME MY EMOTIONAL DISASTER!”
3. The Twilight Sad – Walking For Two Hours : Evokes the feeling one has upon leaving home for life’s first great adventure, with all the fear and excitement rolled in together.
4. Simian Mobile Disco – Wooden : The kind of psychedelic electronica that the Chemical Brothers used to create. Good luck trying not to spin in circles of ecstasy (the emotion…not the drug).
5. Radiohead – Bodysnatchers : Most people prefer Radiohead’s quiet side. I say they should crank the amps up to “11″ more often. But actually, this track is a close relative to “The National Anthem,” from 2000’s Kid A.
6. The Besnard Lakes – For Agent 13 : If you can listen to this song and not feel intensely moved, then congratulations, because you have a stone where your heart should be.
7. Young Galaxy – Outside The City : What could have been the next big Toronto band turned out to be a one-hit wonder of sorts. This track buzzes like a bee hive and climaxes in snow-white noise.
8. The Bird and the Bee – I’m A Broken Heart : The album as a whole doesn’t quite click, but this song has a Motown sweetness and perfectly executed, heart-mending female vocals.
9. M.I.A. – Jimmy : Most praise M.I.A. for her cross-cultural message and political leanings. I think that’s mostly phooey. Maya doesn’t do much on her own, especially on this song, which is basically a remake from an old Bollywood soundtrack. M.I.A.’s real strength is her ability to entrance people and force them to dance with her lazy voice and sweet moves.
10. The Most Serene Republic – Why So Looking Back : One of those songs where every element is turned way up, including two singers, guitars, bass, piano, drums, and possibly other instruments. The formula can flop easily, but in this case comes out with all flags flying.
