The newspaper business is struggling to make the most of the mind-boggling opportunities offered by presenting news online.

  • Multimedia - video, podcasts, slideshows.

  • Interactivity - comments, blogs, forums.

  • Immediacy - the 24-hour newsroom.

  • But the challenge for Michigan newspaper managers and editors is how to keep pace with the steep learning curve. What does it take to build a digital newsroom? And how can that be done well within today's tight budgets?

The Michigan Press Association has asked Michigan State University School of Journalism digitial journalism instructor Bonnie Bucqueroux to provide its members a new Web-based feature called "Building a digital newsroom." The mini-site will serve as an expanding and continuing resource, with future content guided by feedback from MPA members.

The first offering is "Online video on a budget":

MPA asked Bucqueroux to tackle the topic because she is a self-admitted Web geek who built her first site in 1995. She teaches digital journalism and mass media at MSU's J-School, where she also coordinates the Victims and the Media Program. A National Magazine Award winner, she is also publisher of Spartanedge.com, an alternative campus online newspaper produced by more than 30 next-generation MSU journalism students.

Please e-mail Bonnie with questions, comments and ideas on topics to cover. Make sure to stop back often and also to visit her blog for the latest News on digital news.
