NEW FOR DECEMBER 10, 2008:

All Time Low @ St.Andrew's 11/21/08- Shannon Oneil

The All Time Low headlining tour was originally booked at St. Andrew’s Hall but was immediately sold out. After rebooking twice, Michigan’s own, Every Avenue performed with The Maine, Mayday Parade and All Time Low for a sold out crazy-up beat show on Nov. 21.Shannon Oneil notes it says something when the opening band brings the same amount of energy as many headlining bands from different shows.

OAR 11/20/08- Alisha Green

When OAR came to MSU Nov. 20, music wasn’t the only thing they brought. Their concert was just the finale to a day full of events as part of the Campus Consciousness Tour that sought to inspire environmental awareness and activism.

Metal On The Water @ Michigan Princess River Boat 11/22/08- Ben Meissner

When one thinks of a riverboat, the next thought is usually not heavy metal. But on Saturday, Nov. 22, five local metal bands and the Michigan Princess made the most unholy music-venue union since David Hasselhoff and the Berlin Wall. Hundreds of metal-heads filled the boat.

Shannon Oneil has the five CDs worth listening to during the month of October.

Review: "Time the Conqueror" by Jackson Browne- James Andersen

Jackson Browne doesn’t shy away from his criticism of the Bush Administration in his latest album, “Time the Conqueror.” It’s evident very early on that Browne does not agree with Bush on much of anything. MusicEdge contributor James Andersen has the review.

Interview with Mock Orange- by Lily Noga

Mock Orange stopped by Lansing’s very own Mac’s Bar at 8 p.m., Friday Sept. 19. Guitarist Joe Asher obliged us with an interview from very stormy Indiana to tell me about their new album and sound. MusicEdge contributer Lily Noga has more.

Making of Chiodos Music Video- by Shannan Oneil

On Tuesday, Sept.16, Chiodos came home to Michigan to shoot a music video for its popular song, “The Undertakers Thirst for Revenge is Unquenchable (The Final Battle).” The band invited all its fans to the top of a parking structure – basically, a huge slab of concrete – in downtown Pontiac to “show them what Michigan is made out of,” as lead singer Owens put it. MusicEdge contributer Shannan Oneil has the story.

Review: "Death Magnetic"- Metallica by James Andersen

After the debacle that was 2003’s “St. Anger,” it seemed Metallica might have been on their last legs, despite being one of the most influential heavy metal and thrash metal bands of all time. Metallica has made a triumphant return to its classic style in “Death Magnetic,” their ninth studio album. MusicEdge contributer James Andersen has the review.

Review: “Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams"- Solange- by Robert McElwee

With the release of her second album, “Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams,” Ms. Knowles embarks on a journey to not only stake out an identity but also to take the listener on an interesting musical roller coaster. MusicEdge contributor Robert McElwee has the review.

April Concert Preview by Nick Meador - 4/2/08

So spring 2008 doesn't seem in any great hurry to start looking like spring. Boo hoo. In the meantime, live music is great psychic therapy. Though Michigan comes up dry in that department from time to time, April is quite the exception! Here are some highlights of shows across the state this month.

Langerado 2008 Slideshow - photos by Pietro Truba, arranged by Nick Meador - 3/26/08

MusicEdge contributor Pietro Truba attended Langerado Music Festival 2008 in the Seminole Indian Reservation west of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Truba said, "Langerado was one of the last of the music festivals I wanted to attend but hadn't, and it had been four years since I was forced to abandon a vehicle in another state. I thought I should check both of those off the to-do list. Enjoy the pictures." Click the link above to see the full-size slideshow (click "captions" to see the name of the band in each picture).

CONCERT REVIEWS:

AgainstMe! @ Majestic Theater 10/18/08- Amanda Peterka

Managing Editor Amanda Peterka stood only two people away from Against Me! in the very front of the crowd. She wondered if she was going to survive, clinging tightly to a friend she was with. See why it was the sort of out-of-body experience that makes a concert into a great one.

Forever in a Day @ State Theater- 10/18/08-Shannan Oneil

Forever In A Day played its second show in a month-long tour. It definitely wasn’t the biggest performance but the band’s attitude was as if it was headlining at a palace. MusicEdge contributor Shannon Oneil explains why Forever In A Day is a full package of personalities, history, friends and music.

Electric Six @ Small Planet- 10/17/08-Andrew Struska

Swap the thrift store flannel for a leather jacket and take a razor to those old pair of jeans because Detroit natives Electric Six performed in East Lansing. MusicEdge contributor Andrew Struska has the review of them kicking off their promo tour for their fifth album, "Flashy."

FolkFest @ MSU Union Ballroom- 10/3/08- Shannon Oneil

Folk is a little niche of music filled with strange instruments, squeaky notes, unconventional members, non-surface lyrics, and, most of all, soul. It seems that MSU has a group of people whom found their love because the Union Ballroom held Folk Fest featuring Chris Bathgate, Southeast Engine, and Frontier Ruckus.

Chiodos @ The Filmore- 10/10/08- Shannon Oneil

The popular Detroit venue rocked out to the sounds of Forever In A Day, A Skylit Drive, Escape the Fate, Silverstein and Chiodos on Oct. 10. Find out why Shannan Oneil says music is a religion and that night, to that crowd, Craig Owens was a god.

Crofoot @ Pontiac- 9/26/08- Shannan Oneil

A good night always starts with a line wrapping down the block, around the corner and to the last lamppost. The Crofoot in Pontiac held a show on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. featuring The Rocket Summer, The Secret Handshake, The Morning Light and Michigan’s own Forever In A Day. MusicEdge contributor Shannan Oneil has the review.

Mock Orange @ Mac's Bar- 9/17/08- Lily Noga

Mock Orange left the audience completely mesmerized and enthralled, carrying it far away from the checkered floor and grimy tables of Mac’s Bar to an abstract world of perfect musicianship. Check out why their performance was—“Damn, that band was tight.

Letter to You- by Jacob Kanclerz

For still being considered a local band, A Letter to You brings a very sophisticated and mature presence to its music, bringing plenty of variety to the genre of pop-punk. Jacob Kanclerz says the band definitely presents a fresh, summery sound on their EP.

Motion City Soundtrack @ MSU Auditorium, 9/4/08 -
by Nick Robinson

The crowd was full of excitement and the bands full of energy, ready to entertain and rock out. Motion City Soundtrack, with Hard Lessons and The Silent Years, filled the auditorium with a crowd singing along to songs and cheering for encores. MusicEdge contributor Nick Robinson left the concert feeling like the world was alive.

Feist @ Fillmore Detroit, 4/10/08 - by Nick Meador

Feist started off her spring tour in one of Detroit's loveliest theaters. Her performance made the dilapidated buildings next door seem a bit less repugnant.

Anathallo, The Cotton Jones Basket Ride @ MSU Union Ballroom, 3/20/08 by Nick Meador - 3/26/08

Anathallo recently relocated from Mt. Pleasant to Chicago, but they played at the Union Ballroom as if the crowd were all longtime friends. This may be the only indie rock concert on campus this semester, making it all the more special.

Anathallo play new song “Noni’s Field.”

MusicEdge was there to see Jack's Mannequin on February 7 at the Wharton Center Great Hall. Find out the details of the performance and why it was so great.

Girl Talk, Dan Deacon @ Metro (Chicago), 1/26/08 by Nick Meador - 2/6/08

People were on stage the whole time, pushing up against the band until they jumped to the other side of the table. Security guards had to hold the table from being thrust into the crowd. This is only one of the events Nick Meador encounters when attending Girl Talk.
